One of Hunter × Hunter's greatest strengths is that you never really know what kind of story you're about to get.
The Hunter Exam introduces us to this strange world through adventure and survival. Heaven's Arena teaches us about Nen. Yorknew City becomes a dark crime thriller. Greed Island feels like an RPG. And then the Chimera Ant Arc comes along and emotionally destroys everyone.
For this ranking, we're primarily looking at the 2011 anime and breaking a few of its largest storylines into distinct phases to create a more interesting countdown.
Major spoilers ahead.
10. Zoldyck Family Arc
After Killua is taken back home, Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio travel to Kukuroo Mountain to bring their friend back.
It's a relatively short storyline, but it gives us our first proper look at the terrifying Zoldyck family. The Testing Gate alone tells us that this isn't exactly a normal household.
More importantly, the arc develops Gon's friendship with Killua. Gon isn't there to rescue a helpless friend, he simply refuses to let Killua's family decide who he is allowed to be friends with.
Short, simple, but important.
9. Hunter Exam: Survival Phase
This is where Hunter × Hunter first shows that it isn't going to play by normal shounen rules.
Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Leorio face endurance tests, dangerous creatures, psychological challenges, and competitors who are perfectly willing to kill. It's also where Hisoka enters the picture and immediately makes everyone uncomfortable.
The exam does a fantastic job introducing the personalities of the main cast while slowly revealing just how dangerous the world of Hunters actually is.
What begins as a fun adventure quickly becomes something much more unpredictable.
8. Hunter Exam: Final Phase
The final stages of the Hunter Exam shift the focus away from survival and toward the characters themselves.
Killua's confrontation with Illumi reveals the psychological control his family has maintained over him, while Gon demonstrates the ridiculous determination that will define his entire journey.
The tournament structure is also cleverly designed. Winning isn't simply about knocking someone unconscious. You have to make your opponent admit defeat. That creates some fascinating confrontations.
By the end, Gon earns his Hunter License, Killua takes a very different path, and the real adventure finally begins.
7. 13th Hunter Chairman Election Arc
After the emotional devastation of the Chimera Ant Arc, Hunter × Hunter somehow turns politics into entertainment.
With Netero gone, the Hunter Association needs a new chairman, introducing us to the Zodiacs and giving Ging Freecss a much larger role. But the real heart of the arc belongs to Killua and Alluka.
Killua desperately searches for a way to save Gon while dealing with his family's fear of Nanika's extraordinary abilities.
And after years of searching, Gon finally meets Ging.
It's a quieter arc, but one filled with incredibly important character moments.
6. Heaven's Arena Arc
Heaven's Arena is where Hunter × Hunter's power system truly begins.
Gon and Killua enter the massive fighting tower hoping to earn money and become stronger, only to discover something much bigger: Nen.
Through Wing's training, we learn about Ten, Zetsu, Ren, Hatsu, and the different Nen categories that eventually become the foundation of almost every major battle in the series. We also finally get Gon versus Hisoka. The moment Gon lands that long-promised punch is incredibly satisfying.
Heaven's Arena transforms Hunter × Hunter from an adventure anime into something much deeper.
5. Greed Island Arc
Greed Island takes Hunter × Hunter and temporarily turns it into an RPG. Gon and Killua enter a mysterious game created partly by Ging, where players must collect cards, understand complicated rules, and survive against other Nen users.
More importantly, they meet Biscuit Krueger. Under Bisky's brutal training, Gon and Killua dramatically improve their Nen abilities and develop techniques like Jajanken.
The dodgeball match against Razor remains one of the most entertaining battles in the series, while Gon's confrontation with Genthru provides an excellent finale. It's adventurous, creative, and ridiculously fun.
4. Chimera Ant Arc: The Beginning
The Chimera Ant Arc begins almost like a horror story. A strange species starts consuming humans and passing their characteristics to future generations. Before long, increasingly intelligent Chimera Ants begin appearing.
Gon also reunites with Kite, connecting the current story back to the very beginning of his journey.
Then Neferpitou arrives. Kite's encounter with Pitou completely changes the atmosphere of the series and sends Gon down a path nobody expected.
This portion of the arc slowly strips away Hunter × Hunter's adventurous innocence and replaces it with something much darker.
3. Yorknew City Arc
Yorknew City is where Hunter × Hunter proves just how mature its storytelling can become.
Kurapika takes center stage as he hunts the Phantom Troupe, the organization responsible for massacring the Kurta Clan.
The arc introduces Chrollo Lucilfer and properly establishes the Phantom Troupe as one of anime's most memorable villain groups.
Kurapika's Chain Jail, Uvogin's battle, Chrollo's capture, and the underground auction create an atmosphere completely different from everything before it.
It's dark, stylish, tense, and unpredictable. For many fans, Yorknew remains Hunter × Hunter at its coolest.
2. Chimera Ant Arc: Palace Invasion
The Palace Invasion is where years of setup finally explode.
Netero confronts Meruem. Gon searches desperately for Pitou. Killua battles through his own emotions. Knuckle and Shoot face Youpi while Morel attempts to hold the entire operation together.
And somehow, only a few minutes of story time stretch across numerous episodes without losing their intensity.
The narrator becomes almost another character, explaining decisions, emotions, and events occurring within fractions of a second.
Then comes Gon. His transformation after confronting Pitou is one of the darkest and most unforgettable moments in shounen anime.
1. Chimera Ant Arc: Meruem and Komugi
The greatest storyline in Hunter × Hunter isn't really about Gon. It's about Meruem and Komugi.
Meruem begins life believing himself to be the ultimate being, with humans existing beneath him. Then he meets a blind girl who repeatedly defeats him at Gungi. And slowly, the monster becomes human.
Meanwhile, Gon, our cheerful protagonist, moves in almost the opposite direction as grief and rage consume him.
That contrast is what makes the Chimera Ant Arc extraordinary.
By the time Meruem asks Komugi if she is still there during their final moments, Hunter × Hunter has become something far greater than a story about fighting. It's a story about what it actually means to be human.
Honorable Mentions
The Dark Continent Expedition and Succession Contest deserve special recognition, especially for manga readers. Both massively expand the world of Hunter × Hunter and introduce some of Togashi's most ambitious storytelling yet. However, since this ranking primarily focuses on material adapted into the 2011 anime, we've kept them outside the main list.
Conclusion
Hunter × Hunter constantly changes what it wants to be.
It can be an adventure, tournament anime, crime thriller, RPG, political drama, or philosophical tragedy and somehow all of it still feels like Hunter × Hunter.
Yorknew gave us the Phantom Troupe. Greed Island made Nen even better. But the Chimera Ant storyline pushed the series into another league entirely.
And Meruem and Komugi? Yeah. We're still not over that one.
