The Akatsuki wasn't just a group of villains, it was a collection of some of the most dangerous shinobi in the Naruto universe.
Almost every member had a unique fighting style, from Sasori's deadly puppets and Deidara's explosive clay to Itachi's Mangekyo Sharingan and Kisame's enormous chakra reserves.
But ranking them isn't easy. Some relied on raw power, while others won through intelligence, preparation, or incredibly broken abilities.
For this list, we're considering each member at their strongest known version and looking at their overall combat ability, jutsu, intelligence, and battlefield impact.
Major spoilers ahead.
1. Obito Uchiha
Obito is arguably the strongest shinobi to operate within the Akatsuki. His Mangekyo Sharingan granted him Kamui, allowing him to become intangible and transport himself or others to another dimension. This single ability made him extremely difficult to defeat. Obito also possessed Hashirama cells, giving him enhanced durability and regeneration. Later, after becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki, his power reached an entirely different level. His intelligence, manipulation skills, combat experience, and overwhelming abilities make Obito the most dangerous Akatsuki member on this list.
2. Nagato
Nagato was the true force behind Pain and one of the most terrifying users of the Rinnegan. Through the Six Paths of Pain, he could control multiple bodies, each with different abilities ranging from gravity manipulation and powerful summons to chakra absorption and soul extraction. His Shinra Tensei was powerful enough to destroy the Hidden Leaf Village. Nagato could also summon the Gedō Statue and use the Outer Path. His enormous chakra reserves, Rinnegan abilities, and battlefield control place him comfortably among the strongest members of the Akatsuki.
3. Itachi Uchiha
Itachi was an Uchiha prodigy whose abilities made him one of the most dangerous members of the Akatsuki. His Mangekyo Sharingan gave him access to Tsukuyomi, Amaterasu, and Susanoo. His Susanoo carried the Sword of Totsuka, which could seal opponents, and the Yata Mirror, providing an exceptional defense. But Itachi's greatest weapon may have been his intelligence. He rarely fought recklessly and could analyze opponents extremely quickly. Even while suffering from a serious illness, he remained capable of defeating extremely powerful shinobi.
4. Orochimaru
Orochimaru was a former Akatsuki member and one of the most dangerous rogue shinobi in Naruto. His obsession with immortality led him to develop forbidden techniques and conduct countless experiments. His Living Corpse Reincarnation allowed him to transfer his consciousness into new bodies, making him extraordinarily difficult to kill permanently. Orochimaru could also summon giant snakes, use the Sword of Kusanagi, perform powerful sealing techniques, and eventually access Sage-related abilities. His vast knowledge of jutsu and ability to survive seemingly fatal situations make him one of the organization's most formidable former members.
5. Kisame Hoshigaki
Known as the Monster of the Hidden Mist, Kisame possessed one of the largest chakra reserves among the Akatsuki. His sword, Samehada, could absorb chakra from opponents and transfer it to Kisame, making him especially dangerous against powerful chakra users. He could also merge with Samehada and transform into a shark-like warrior capable of dominating underwater battles. Kisame's massive Water Release techniques could create enormous bodies of water even in dry environments. His battle against Might Guy proved just how much punishment he could take before finally being defeated.
6. Deidara
Deidara turned explosive art into an incredibly dangerous fighting style. Using explosive clay, he could create birds, insects, dragons, and massive bombs capable of destroying entire areas. His C3 bomb was powerful enough to threaten a village, while C4 created microscopic explosives that attacked opponents from inside their bodies. His final technique, C0, transformed Deidara himself into a massive explosion. What made him especially dangerous was his creativity. He constantly adapted his explosives to counter his opponents. His battle against Sasuke remains one of the most memorable Akatsuki fights.
7. Sasori
Sasori of the Red Sand was a master puppeteer who turned human bodies into weapons. His greatest achievement was transforming the Third Kazekage into a puppet, allowing him to use the Kazekage's Magnet Release. Sasori himself had replaced much of his body with puppet mechanisms, allowing him to survive injuries that would kill ordinary humans. His Hundred Puppets Technique could overwhelm opponents with an enormous army, while his poisonous weapons made even small injuries potentially fatal. His combination of preparation, poison, puppetry, and unconventional body made him incredibly difficult to defeat.
8. Konan
Konan is often overlooked when discussing the strongest Akatsuki members, but her abilities were far more dangerous than they initially appeared. Her Paper Ninjutsu allowed her to transform her body into paper, create weapons, and avoid conventional attacks. Her greatest feat came when she prepared an enormous trap specifically designed to kill Obito. She created a massive field of explosive tags that detonated continuously, forcing Obito to use Izanagi to survive. Konan's intelligence, preparation, and creativity made her a formidable opponent even against much stronger shinobi.
9. Kakuzu
Kakuzu was one of the Akatsuki's most durable and versatile fighters. His unusual body contained multiple hearts connected by black threads, allowing him to survive attacks that would kill ordinary shinobi. Each heart could also provide access to a different elemental nature, giving him an enormous range of offensive techniques. His combination of Fire, Wind, Lightning, Earth, and Water Release made him extremely difficult to counter. Kakuzu's partnership with the immortal Hidan was particularly dangerous. Although Naruto eventually defeated him with the Wind Release: Rasenshuriken, Kakuzu remained a terrifying opponent.
10. Hidan
Hidan may be the weakest member on this list in terms of overall power, but his unique ability makes him extremely dangerous. As a follower of Jashin, Hidan possesses a form of immortality that allows him to survive injuries that would kill normal humans. His ritual technique becomes deadly once he obtains his opponent's blood, allowing damage inflicted on himself to be transferred to his target. His three-bladed scythe makes obtaining blood easier during combat. However, his lack of speed, strategy, and versatility compared with other Akatsuki members ultimately places him at number ten.
Honorable Mentions
Several characters associated with the Akatsuki deserve recognition as well. Zetsu played a crucial role through manipulation, intelligence, and information gathering, although his direct combat ability was difficult to compare with the others. Jūzō Biwa was another former Akatsuki member and a skilled swordsman from the Hidden Mist. Orochimaru's brief time in the organization also shows just how dangerous the Akatsuki's recruitment pool was.
Conclusion
The Akatsuki remains one of anime's greatest villain organizations because every member brought something completely different to the battlefield.
Obito had space-time manipulation, Nagato possessed the Rinnegan, Itachi mastered some of the most powerful Uchiha techniques, while Kisame could overwhelm opponents with enormous chakra reserves.
Even the lower-ranked members had abilities capable of defeating most ordinary shinobi.
That's what made the Akatsuki so terrifying, you never knew what kind of threat you were going to face.
Who do you think deserves the number one spot?
